Throughout his long career as a critic John Ruskin was also a talented and prolific amateur artist.

At first, he worked in a conventional style for his own amusement, but as his understanding of the creative process deepened he came to see his drawings as a means of verifying his changing ideas about the nature of art and reality.

The purpose of this study is to show how Ruskin's use of drawing as a tool and a language grew out of amateur traditions in England, and how his graphic methods served his interests in art, science and history.
