La première biographie exhaustive de John Ruskin par son disciple William Gershom Collingwood (1854-1932), auteur, artiste et peintre ; il rencontra Ruskin à l'University College d'Oxford et se rendit ensuite fréquemment dans son domaine de Brantwood.
Sa biographie est vite devenue l'ouvrage de référence sur John Ruskin ; Collingwood organisa plusieurs expositions consacrées à Ruskin, notamment celles de Londres (1901) et de Manchester (1904) et publia son œuvre poétique.
